Game night
I tried to make it a fun 'mom night.' I heeded Oscar's suggestion of homemade mac and cheese (his favorite!), and we sat around the table, discussing our daily highlights.
"Under Pressure" came on. I tried to explain how there's a narrow generational slice who hear that song and aren't sure whether they're about to get Freddie Mercury or Vanilla Ice. You have to be almost exactly my age to have heard Ice Ice Baby before becoming familiar with Under Pressure, and everyone younger came along after that particular aspect of 90s pop culture got memory-holed.
We started playing a bunch of Clinton-era hip hop, but the evening kind of devolved from there. The kids switched to making silly noises, or speaking to each other in conspiratorial voices.
I think I just sounded old to them.
But, Mackenzie brought us back to basics by whipping out SKULLS, and we had a blast. It was something we could connect on, regardless of age.
